All of us know that Jaipur – the ‘Pink City’ of Rajasthan is celebrated worldwide for its rich culture, royal heritage & beautiful tourist attractions. But only a few people are aware that the capital city has also achieved a big milestone in the field of medical science.

Jaipur Foot, prosthetic limb which was invented in Jaipur in 1968 has changed the lives of millions all across the world. Its journey began when 3 doctors from SMS hospital realized the need for creating artificial limbs that fit the needs of the Indian population. The credit for this remarkable invention goes to Dr. P.K Sethi and sculptor Ram Chandra Sharma who along with other two doctors started the creation of these artificial limbs. The idea turned out to be a huge success as these artificial limbs were waterproof, cost-efficient and looked very much like the actual foot.

The organization that supported this invention is Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata  Samiti (BMVSS) which is the world’s largest organization for the disabled having its headquarters in Jaipur. The organization has been successful in supporting economically backward classes not just by providing free of cost services but has also helped the patients to get back their social status. It has organized camps in more than 25 countries of the world and made millions stand on their feet again.
