Toorji ka Jhalra (Toorji’s Step Well) is one of the most famous places to visit in Jodhpur. It is just a few steps away from the Clock Tower. This place is an example of world-class ancient architecture of the times of Indian Kings. The well consists of hundreds of stairs in a zigzag pattern forming a marvelous arrangement to reach the bottom of the well. This well present the tremendous architecture of ancient times as shows that the old architects were not less in compare to today’s modern architects.

This beautiful edifice was made using the world-famous rose-red sandstone found in Jodhpur. About 200 feet in depth, it has two access levels of water and one separate tank at the bottom of the well. In old times, bullocks were used to withdraw water by making them circumambulate around the step well and using a big Persian wheel.

At one time, this well was full of garbage but recently the government has paid attention to it and cleared the debris and restored it. Now it looks tidy and beautiful. Also, local volunteers take care of the daily maintenance and cleanness of the well. At the time of the rainy season, it looks so attractive when it is fully loaded with rainwater. Because of recent urban work around the step well, many shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels, and markets have developed near it.

Toorji ka Jhalra is a great place to beat the heat in summer. The residents near the well like to come here for bathing and children enjoy diving into the water. They feed the fishes in the tank and take care of the well voluntarily. A lot of visitors come here daily to see the well-built architecture and to capture the elegance of this monument.
